Detailed history and insightful visit to Rue des Canettes in Paris
Rue des Canettes, nestled in the 6th arrondissement of Paris within the Odéon district, stretches from No. 27 rue du Four to No. 6 Place Saint-Sulpice. The creation of this historic street dates back to 1540, and it measures 132 meters in length. Its width of 12 meters was predetermined by a royal decree issued on 27 September 1838. Originally appearing in the 13th century as Saint-Sulpice Street, it was later known as Rue Neuve Saint-Sulpice. In 1636, it took on its current name, Rue des Canettes, possibly inspired by certain historical documents referring to it as Viracoublé street and Polypus hole street. The present name, however, likely originated from the teaching of Cannettes, a bas-relief decorating the facade of No. 18 on the street. This street is lined with historically significant houses. For instance, the abodes of Jacques Caffiéri, the king’s sculptor, and his sons, Philippe and Jean-Jacques, are located here. Another notable historical figure associated with this street is Marcel Proust whose devoted servant, Celeste Albaret, opened the Hotel Alsace Lorraine here, later renamed La Perle Canettes. Interestingly, in 2008, according to the newspaper Liberation, a British spy known as Black Tom lived at No. 16, a claim he strongly denied.
