Anchored in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, the Aquarium Tropical de la Porte Dorée stands out as a flagship attraction of the Palais de la Porte Dorée. With a rich history spanning more than 80 years, this space has continually fascinated a varied audience with its collection of 300 species of tropical aquatic animals and its offering of cultural and educational activities. The only one of its kind in the capital until 2006, the aquarium is located in the vibrant Lyon-Bercy district, accessible via metro at Porte Dorée station, the T3a tramway, or the PC2 and 46 buses. Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with extended hours until 7 p.m. on weekends, it closes its doors only on December 25, January 1, and May 1. Entrance is paid, except for certain groups such as children under 4 years old, teachers, journalists, disabled people and war veterans, with the possibility of photographing without flash.

Created in 1931 for the International Colonial Exhibition, the Tropical Aquarium is located within the Palais de la Porte Dorée, erected for the same occasion. Its mission was to reveal the world’s marine diversity, encouraging visitors to discover the treasures of the colonies in terms of fauna and flora. Initially an integral part of the Museum of the Colonies, the aquarium saw its existence perpetuated thanks to the continual influx of visitors, even after the transformation of the museum into the Museum of Overseas France. The last major renovation in 1985 was carried out respecting the authenticity of the site, classified as national heritage, while updating the facilities for the safety of visitors and the well-being of species. This project was able to reconcile heritage conservation and innovation, allowing the aquarium to offer new activities.
