History and visit the Place de l’Etoile in Paris
The Place de l’Etoile, currently known as Place Charles de Gaulle, is an iconic landmark in Paris. Previously, it bore the name of the Arc de Triomphe, the monumental arch that dominates the square. Following Charles de Gaulle’s passing, the square was renamed in his honor on 13 November 1970. It intersects the 8th, 16th, and 17th arrondissements of Paris and stretches 240 meters on each side. Established in 1670, the square has a rich history.
Historically referred to as Chaillot hill, the elevated ground of Place de l’Etoile was developed by Marigny. Significant architectural efforts culminated in 1777, resulting in the star-shaped pathways that define its layout. This space once served as a hunting crossroads. In 1787, as the walls for the farmers were being constructed, the barrier of Neuilly took shape. Napoleon commissioned the construction of the Arc de Triomphe at the square’s center in 1806, which was ultimately completed in 1836.
During the Second Empire, renowned architect Jacques Hittorff redesigned the square. The project, overseen by Baron Haussmann, the Prefect of the Seine, ensured that the gardens of the mansions gracing the square faced it. Today, twelve of Paris’ major avenues converge at this square, forming six axes and creating the star-shaped design it’s celebrated for. Encircling the square are two streets, complemented by two underpasses catering to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
