It features a main building that houses a spacious living room, a music room, a dining room reflecting the eighteenth-century elegance, a splendid kitchen, and numerous apartments. Additionally, Castle Jossigny is home to a library and a coterie. Its outbuildings, situated on the north side, include a pigeon house, the servants’ quarters, and stables. The castle’s design highlights Mansart Sagonne’s tasteful characteristics, with facades featuring arched hollow sections. Maneviellette’s influence is notable in the arrangement of tables and the profile band across the ground floor. A distinctive statuette adorns the central pavilion, complemented by the intricate broken pediment of the front building, which is decorated with an oculus amidst arabesques. The railings are crafted from exquisite wrought iron.

History of Castle Jossigny

Jossigny Castle, constructed in 1753 to honor Claude Francois Leconte Gravel, an adviser in the Fifth Chamber of the Parliament of Paris investigations, was designed by Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne, a descendant of the celebrated Mansart lineage. Historically, the land was owned by Cyprian Freil, a bourgeois of Lagny-sur-Marne, during the Middle Ages. On November 4, 1359, he sold the land to Peter Orgemont, an advisor to the king. The Orgemont family retained ownership of Jossigny until its sale on June 25, 1574, to Robert Jacques, a Parisian citizen. The castle remained under the Robert family’s care until 1975. By the end of the sixteenth century, it became part of the Bragelongue family through the marriage of Jacques Robert’s daughter to Jacques Beard of Bragelongue, a king’s counselor and master of his ordinary chamber of accounts. In the early eighteenth century, the Château de Jossigny came into the possession of the more modest Leconte of Gravel family, following Augustin Leconte’s marriage to Francesca Bragelongue. Augustin, lord of Gravel and king’s advisor in the court of aids, marked a significant period starting February 27, 1704. The castle has undergone renovations since the seventeenth century. Following Claude-François’s death on September 15, 1787, the castle passed to his eldest son, Claude Eleanor.

In 1949, Baron Guy Francis generously donated Castle Jossigny to the State, continuing to manage its agricultural lands until his demise in 1975. Subsequently, the castle came under the guardianship of the Centre national des monuments historiques and the conservation authorities of Château de Champs-sur-Marne. Both the castle itself, including the facades and roofs of its outbuildings, along with the park and its avenues, have been recognized as historical monuments since December 23, 1942, underlining their significant cultural and historical value.
