History and Visits to Rue de la Cité in Paris
Rue de la Cité, located in the fourth arrondissement, connects the Notre-Dame Bridge to Petit-Pont. This is the main street of the city. Once, there were three streets that have made their mark on the history of Paris: the streets of Lantern, Jewry, and Market Palu. However, in the nineteenth century, these three primary routes of the district were unified under the name Rue de la Cité. The origins of these three streets are noteworthy:
Street of the Lantern
This street adopted various names in the fourteenth century before settling on the name of Lantern, attributed to an inn located on this street. The Saint-Denis-de-la-Charter church, dedicated to Saint-Denis, became a monastery and remained under the ownership of the clergy until the revolution, when it was nationalized and later sold to an individual.
Jewry Street
It earned its name due to the settlement of Jews in the twelfth century who faced growing anti-Semitism from the people and the French nobility. Under the reign of St. Louis, they were required to wear a yellow mark on their stomachs, and under Philip the Bold, they were even forced to wear a horn. The wheat market in Halle Beauce existed previously on the street and was ceded to Philip Convers, a canon of Notre Dame.
Market Palu Street
A church was built on the site of a synagogue in 1183. The church of La Madeleine became the seat of the oldest brotherhood: the grand brotherhood of lords, priests, bourgeois, and bourgeoisie of Paris, a brotherhood where all the French nobility belonged until the revolution. Rue du Marché-Palu was initially a market during the time of the Romans built on marshland (palus).
