History of the town of Cambrai
Cambrai, a city in France, is situated in the Nord department and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. Following the Treaty of Verdun, it became a border city between the “median” stronghold of Lothair I and the “Western” kingdom of Charles the Bald. During World War I, Cambrai was invaded by German forces, leading to robbery, requisition, and hostage-taking in 1917. The city also faced significant turmoil during World War II.
Tourism and activities in Cambrai
Despite significant destruction in its past, Cambrai boasts a rich heritage and was designated a city of art and history in 1992. Visitors can explore Notre Dame de Grâce Cathedral, a Gothic-style building constructed in 1703, which has undergone extensive renovations following various wars. Other notable sites include the Main Chapel of the Major Seminary, Saint-Gery church, and the Citadel, featuring galleries, a powder magazine, officer housing, and a 19th-century “bomb-proof” barracks. The Château de Selles, Cambrai’s belfry, and the German cemetery are also worth visiting. For relaxation, the public garden, divided into the “Flower Garden,” “Monstrelet Garden,” and “Garden of Caves,” offers a serene escape. Cultural enthusiasts should not miss the Museum of Fine Arts and the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art in Cambrai.
