History and visit the Rue des Abbesses in Paris
The Rue des Abbesses, one of the oldest streets in Paris, is situated in the Grandes-Carrières district of the 18th arrondissement. Stretching from 89 rue des Martyrs to 34 rue Lepic and 2 rue Tholozé, it spans 418 meters in length and 14 meters in width. This historic road was once part of Montmartre and first documented in 1672 as rue de la Cure, later renamed rue de l’Abbaye. It was officially incorporated into Parisian streets by a decree on May 23, 1863, and named Rue des Abbesses on February 26, 1867, after the abbesses of the Abbey of Montmartre, founded in 1134 by King Louis VI and Queen Adelaide.
The street has seen notable abbesses like Marguerite de Rochechouart Monpipeau and Marie-Louise de Laval, the latter executed on July 21, 1794, at what is now Place de la Nation. Following the French Revolution, the abbey was evacuated in 1792 and later sold as national property. The parish church was repurposed for various uses, including a gun shop and a meeting place for electors. Rue des Abbesses is known for landmarks such as the Théâtre des Abbesses at No. 31 and the St John’s Church of Montmartre.
