The Gare d’Austerlitz, situated on the left bank of the Seine in the 13th arrondissement, is one of the six main terminus stations of the SNCF network. The implementation of the LGV Atlantique has resulted in a decrease in traffic, with an annual passenger count falling to around 31 million, half that of the Gare Montparnasse. Yet, it remains an important station for the Paris-Bordeaux and Paris-Toulouse lines.
The station was officially opened on September 20, 1840, as part of the Paris-Orleans network. After just three years, expansion works were carried out, leading to a full reconstruction in 1862. Today, the station comprises both the main line station and the underground station, which serves the RER Line C. The former administration building of the Paris-Orleans railway, which once housed several offices and the Valhubert theatre, has been demolished, with only the facade preserved. It was sold by the SNCF and has undergone extensive renovation to accommodate modern offices.
Gare d’Austerlitz now features 25 tracks, with 21 belonging to the main railway station and the remaining 4 serving the underground station. It offers transport to various destinations including Toulouse, Limoges, Perpignan, Royan, Bourges, and Orleans. It also hosts overnight trains to Spain and southern France, with destinations like Barcelona, Madrid, Nice, Port-Bou, Toulouse, Luchon, Briançon, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, Bourg-Saint-Maurice, and Rodez.
Despite several changes over the years, much of the station remains intact. From a touristic standpoint, the station’s facade, classified as a historic monument along with the marquise, the grand hall, and the two metro exits, is a particular highlight.
