History of the town of Clamecy in Burgundy
Clamecy, a picturesque town in France, was originally identified as Clamiciacus in early 634. The town saw its first castle erected in either the ninth or tenth century. Following tumultuous periods in its history, Clamecy embraced a peaceful existence and thrived on the activity of floating timber. This unique technique, conceived by Jean Rouvet in the sixteenth century, involved transporting wood for heating via streams to cater to Paris’s needs. Yet, the emergence and popularization of coal posed a significant challenge to this timber-based trade, leading to several conflicts within Clamecy.
