History of Marly-le-Roi
According to a parchment dated April 25, 697, the city of Marly-le-Roi was already known as Thierry III. This scroll attested to an exchange of land between the abbey and a member of the Merovingian aristocracy. At the time, her name was Mairilacus. The seigneury belonged to the lords of Montmorency until its acquisition by Louis XIV in 1676. Indeed, the heritage of the city is closely linked to Louis XIV and his descendants.
The Sun King made “his” castle of Marly. Located on the Plateau du Coeur Volant, it is more intimate than Versailles. The city’s coat of arms is made up of two suns, symbolizing Louis XIV, and eight eagles, arms of the Montmorency, first lords of Marly, accompanied by the two royal colors which are blue and yellow. During the French Revolution, the city bore the name of Marly-la-Machine. With its friendly character, in the 20th century, it attracted painters, poets, writers and sculptors.
