Château Bourron is a fortress nestled in the municipality of Bourron-Marlotte, in the Seine-et-Marne department, 45 minutes south of Paris and 7 km from Fontainebleau. Situated between the Fontainebleau forest to the north and the Loing valley to the south, this remarkable estate welcomes you throughout the year for a luxurious stay.
Description of Château Bourron
Château Bourron is a residence centered in a 40-hectare park, showcasing brick and stone architecture featuring a main building with a floor and two smaller wings. Its design mirrors that of a medieval fortress. The walls, constructed with porous stones from the Beer forest, are covered with a protective coating. The original entry portal, once part of an access bridge, has been demolished. Surrounded by a white-water moat, the East and West pavilions incorporate the ancient guard towers, adorned with geometric ornaments, including the small bridges and window borders. The windows, designed in an archaic style, are set apart by significant spaces, with bases and steps crafted from sandstone sourced from the Apremont gorges. The ceremonial living room offers views of the castle’s southeast corner and north, ensuring all rooms benefit from abundant sunlight. The west pavilion and the moat’s east side house the wheels used in the Middle Ages for transporting supplies to the ground-floor kitchens.
History of Château Bourron
The Château Bourron estate has been occupied since the Neolithic era, approximately 5000 years BC. The current château, erected in the early seventeenth century, replaced a former noble residence. Its name ‘Bourron’ was given by the Celts during their occupation, derived from “Bouvron” or “Borro”, indicating “Gallic dignity of waters.” In 1367, it was fortified, “enclosed by walls and surrounded by water ditches.” During the Revolution, it suffered at the hands of the “sans-culottes de Nemours” who destroyed the entrance, coat of arms, pigeon house, and ditches. Over the years, Château Bourron changed hands among several families and was sold three times: in 1849 by Montgon, in 1862 by Brandoix, and in 1878 by the Piollenc. In 1878, the Montesquiou-Frézensac family acquired the château, initiating a comprehensive restoration and refurnishing it with family relics. They also redesigned the park in a French style.
