History of Châteaudun
Châteaudun, a historic French commune, is situated in the Eure-et-Loir department of the Centre-Val de Loire region. The name Châteaudun derives from the Latin ‘Castellum’ and the Gallic ‘Dunos’, both meaning fortress. During the revolution, the commune briefly changed its name to Dun-sur-Loir for 11 months. Châteaudun has witnessed numerous conflicts, including attacks by local lords and national wars, and has endured the ravages of plague, famine, and fire. In the Second World War, the town suffered multiple bombings, leading to significant damage in several areas. It was finally liberated on August 17 after intense fighting.
