History of the town of Bethune
Bethune is a charming town in France, located in the department of Pas-de-Calais and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. The town’s name, of Germanic origin, translates to “pens.” Evidence of human presence in Bethune dates back to the sixth century, as indicated by the discovery of a Merovingian cemetery. The town has a rich Christian heritage; in 502, the Bishop of Arras built a church there dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. Bethune experienced several calamities from the eleventh to the twelfth century, including earthquakes, floods, and plague epidemics that devastated the region and its inhabitants. In response to these challenges, the city was fortified in the twelfth century, marking a significant development in its history.
