History of the town of Saint-Lô in Normandy
Saint-Lô is a French commune located in the department of Manche in the Lower Normandy region. In Gallo-Roman times, the city was known as Briovère or Briovera, meaning ‘the bridge over the Vire’ in Celtic. Initially occupied by the Gallic clan Unelles of Cotentin, the town later fell under Roman rule. The third century saw the area become a battleground against Saxon invasions. In 889, Saint-Lô was besieged by Vikings, leading to significant destruction. However, it was from the eleventh century onwards that the town began to flourish, eventually becoming one of the wealthiest in the duchy of Normandy by the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
