History of the town of Chalon-sur-Saone in Burgundy
Located in France, Chalon-sur-Saône is strategically positioned on the Rhine-Rhône axis. Nestled within the Burgundy region and the Saône-et-Loire department, it stands as the second-largest city in Burgundy. The city has a tumultuous past. In 732, it faced destruction at the hands of the Saracens, only to be rebuilt by Charlemagne shortly after. However, misfortune struck again when it was razed by Lothair. World War II brought additional challenges; Chalon-sur-Saône found itself precariously situated between the occupied and free zones. Yet, on 5 September 1944, liberation arrived with the Third Infantry Division from Algeria reclaiming the city.
