History of the city of Acquigny
Acquigny is a commune located in the Upper Normandy region, specifically in the Eure department. It is part of the borough of Les Andelys and the Canton of South Louviers. The first mention of the village dates back to 876 in the possessions of the Abbey of Saint-Ouen. According to legends, the martyrdom of St. Mauxe and St. Vénérand led to the establishment of Acquigny’s church, which was bestowed in its entirety by Roger Tosny, Lord of Conches, in 1035.
Tourism and visits in Acquigny
One of the main attractions of the town is Acquigny Castle, initially a fortified site to control navigation along the Eure River during the High Middle Ages. During the Hundred Years War, the castle was taken over by the armies of Charles V. It is now situated in a landscaped park adorned with lawns, shrubs, blooming rhododendrons, and lakes. Besides the castle, tourists can visit the village’s church, which was largely influenced by the 18th century. Built around 1545, the church has undergone numerous changes and visitors can explore its nave, chancel, and sacristy. Other points of interest include: the old prison, the prehistoric walls of Chateau Robert, Becdal Manor, the Bridge of Boards, and Planks Castle. A visit to the Chapel of the Holy Spirit is also rewarding.
