Fort Risban in Calais
Built on what was a sandbank on the shoreline, the fort was considered to be the “guardian” of port access during the Hundred Years War. Since then, he has had various modifications. Erected by the English after the capture of Calais in 1347, Fort Risban was a strategic point of defense of the city. It served to prevent any supplies from outside and to besiege the city with famine. Its wooden tower was replaced in a larger one called “Lancaster” between 1403 and 1405. Guns were placed on this tower. For more than two hundred years the fort was occupied by the English. But it was taken over by the French in 1558 with the recovery of Calais by the Duke of Croÿ.
Thirty years later, the Lancaster Tower was razed for safety. Before entering the era of bastion fortification, Fort Risban flies the Spanish flag. Despite the powder explosion in 1799, the fort still remained the main defense of the port in the 1850s. During the Second World War, it was able to shelter the many Calaisians who were fleeing the bombings. The walls of the fort have a very long history and has witnessed most of the most significant events in France.
Thus, it begins to open its doors to boaters since 1950. It even hosts the headquarters of the Yacht Club de Calais. It is currently being renovated to better satisfy its visitors. Being one of the last marine forts of the French territory, the fort was classified as a historical monument in 1990. Our destination is essentially from the airport to the hotel, we can however only program you circuits to discover the unavoidable in the department .
The Saint-Vaast Abbey
The history and construction of the abbey is born from a legend. And originally, it was restored by St. Vaast and his followers to thank God for saving the inhabitants from the claws of a bear. Then Saint-Vaast died in 540 and was buried in his church. A century after his death, his relics were transferred by Saint Géry on the other side of the Crinchon in his oratory. Unfortunately, the church burned down in 783 and Charlemagne rebuilt it by adding three juxtaposed churches, the largest of which is Saint-Vaast.
The cradle of the future city
Renovated in 1746 by Cardinal Rohan and Dom Vigor de Briois, Saint-Vaast Abbey became the cradle of the future city. It is right at the foot of the old Gallo-Roman city, on the hill of Madeleine. Although it was spared during the revolution, it was still destroyed in July 1915. Next to the abbey, the former abbey became a cathedral. After all this, they were rebuilt identically. Thus, the two monuments formed the largest religious group in France until the 18th century.
The collections or the temporary exhibitions
The Saint-Vaast Abbey is composed of three courtyards with a majestic cloister and the refectory of the monks. From the entrance porch, you can join a beautiful courtyard. Currently, this former Benedictine abbey hosts the Museum of Fine Arts in the city of Arras. It can host not only meetings, conferences, conferences but also cocktails, dinners or parties.
