History and visit to the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris
In 1984, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art was created by Mr. Cartier. For 10 years, the Foundation was domiciled in Jouy-en-Josas, near Versailles, before changing location to Boulevard Raspail in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. The current building, designed by architect Jean Nouvel in 1994, reflects his exceptional talent. Jean Nouvel is also known for having designed the Institut du Monde Arabe and the Musée du Quai Branly. The foundation benefits from an architectural garden housing 35 species of trees, including fig trees, as well as various aromatic and decorative plants such as mint, rosemary, violets and lilies of the valley. In 1998, a green wall, the work of tropical botanical specialist Patrick Blanc, was added above the entrance to the building.
The Cartier Foundation is a privileged place for cooperation with artists, offering a space for the expression and protection of their works through commissions, publications and exhibitions. It also facilitates research in the international artistic field, covering areas such as artistic creation, design, photography, fashion and sculpture. One of the strong points of its activities is the biennial award of the HCB prize by an international jury, worth 35,000 euros, open to all artists around the world, aiming to discover new talents, whether French or foreigners.
Open to the art of diverse cultures, such as American, African and Asian cultures, the Cartier Foundation today has more than 1,000 works by 300 artists of different nationalities. It maintains an important relationship with major international institutions and extends its presence abroad through exhibitions in New York, Tokyo, London, Rio de Janeiro, highlighting works by artists such as Francesca Woodman or Jean Michel.< /p>
The Cartier Foundation also organizes various cultural events, ranging from music to poetry, including dance and fashion shows. Large-scale exhibitions, notably dedicated to the Indians of the Amazon, have been organized. In partnership with Nikon, the Foundation also offers children the opportunity to learn about photography through photoshoot sessions.
