History and tour of Hôtel de Guénégaud in Paris
The Hotel Guénégaud, situated on rue des Archives in the Ile de France region, is located in the 3rd district of the French capital. This architectural gem, crafted by François Mansart, was built for Count Henri de Montbrison Guénégaud, who was the Marquis de Plancy, secretary of the king, a government adviser, and a master of accounts. Its construction spanned from 1651 to 1655 and has been listed as a historic monument since June 15, 1962. The Hotel is also renowned as the Museum of Nature and Hunting.
As one of the surviving works of François Mansart, the Hotel Guénégaud now serves as the headquarters of the Foundation of the House and Nature Hunt, as well as a private club bearing the same name. Its architecture follows the Parisian 17th-century Hotel style, featuring a main body with two wings, a building facing the street, a courtyard, and a French-style garden. The Hotel is constructed on two levels with large glass windows, characterized by great simplicity. The original staircase of the Hotel still exists today.
Having undergone various ownerships and renovations, the Hotel Guénégaud was saved from demolition in 1959 through the intervention of Minister of Culture André Malraux. The city of Paris then purchased the Hotel, leasing it to the foundation. The museum, opened in February 1967, was initially exclusive to club members but has been accessible to the general public since 2007. It showcases the relationship between the environment and humans, the history of hunting, and features contemporary art exhibitions.
