History and visit rue du Cirque in Paris
Rue du Cirque is a street located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, passing through the Madeleine district. It starts at 40, avenue Gabriel and concludes at 63, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Spanning 240 meters in length and 12 meters in width, its inception dates back to 1847. Constructed on land owned by the Duke of Galliera, it was initially named Rue de Joinville in honor of the Prince de Joinville, King Louis Philippe’s son. The name changed in 1849 after the July Monarchy’s fall, alluding to the circus that once stood in the Square Marigny on the Champs-Élysées and was eventually demolished in 1900.
Historically, Rue du Cirque has housed several notable buildings. For instance, Captain Rene Fonck, a leading aviator and ally of France during World War I with 75 victories, resided in the building at number 3. Another significant establishment is the gallery owned by Henriette Gomes and her husband, which opened its doors during the Second World War. The street has been a residence to numerous distinguished personalities, such as Miss Howard, lover of Prince-President Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte. Other notable residents include the French comedy actor Charles Le Bargy, composer and conductor Reynaldo Hahn, opera-dancer Mariette Ricotti, and French politician François Pietri.
