History and Visit of Aguesseau Street in Paris
Aguesseau Street is in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. It was opened in the first half of the 18th century on plots of land that belonged to Sir Chancellor Aguesseau. The street was named after Joseph-Antoine Aguesseau, the chancellor’s brother. The Hotel Grand Aigle, which welcomed Lieutenant Alexandre de Girardin, first Huntsman to King Louis XVIII, was located on Aguesseau Street. In the late 17th century, the curate of the Madeleine decided to establish a cemetery on a portion of the marshes (near Surène) belonging to the factory of La Madeleine, extending over 200 yards. Around 1721, the land where the cemetery was located was exchanged by Sir Descazaux, who then sold it to Joseph Antoine Aguesseau. This exchange marked the origin of Aguesseau Street. Morphologically, Aguesseau Street measures 175 meters in length and has a width of 10 meters. It begins at No. 60 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and ends at No. 23 Rue de Surène. Located in the Madeleine district, the street, viewed from Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, appears modern with living spaces and buildings in dark colors. Aguesseau Street is not known for many historic buildings. Notable sites include No. 11, once home to Princess Elisa Bonaparte, and No. 18, a boutique hotel that during the French Revolution belonged to the Countess of Saint Cropte Tree. At No. 22 is the remains of the small Hotel de l’Aigle.
