This street already existed in the seventeenth century. The path of oxen was the name given to the area between the Avenue de Saint-Ouen and St. Creek, on the west side. This lasted until boulevard Bessières. The entire path of oxen was called Marcadet Street in 1856. The origin of the name comes from a locality called Mercade, from the Latin word which means a Mercadius market. The Mercade was implanted near the church of Saint-Denys de la Chapelle.
