History and visit of Rue de Grenelle in Paris
In the seventh arrondissement of Paris, Rue de Grenelle connects Rue du Dragon to Avenue de la Bourdonnais, passing along Rue de Belgrade. It takes its name from a warren (garanella) which once belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Germain. Visiting Rue de Grenelle means encountering two monuments of piety, with towering statues of Louis XIV and Louis XV, not to mention the Hôtel des Invalides and the École Militaire. In addition to these iconic monuments, Rue de Grenelle also houses many other historical sites. Created by the famous Bouchardon, the Grenelle Fountain, also known as the Fountain of the Four Seasons, dates from 1739. Formerly used for the Pentemont Abbey church, now a Protestant place of worship, this monastery, built in 1672, attracts tourists with the splendor of its gardens. Formerly, these gardens neighbored those of the canons of the Holy Sepulchre. The former Hôtel de Brissac once housed the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Social Affairs. Rue de Grenelle is home to many hotels that have marked the history of France. At No. 101 is the Hôtel Rothelin, which served as a seat for the Ministry of Industry, while at No. 110 stands the Courteilles Hall, headquarters of the Ministry of National Education in 1778. Not far away is the Swiss Embassy. At No. 136 is the Hôtel de Noirmoutiers, residence of the Prefect of the Île-de-France in 1722. The current IGN map depositories once served in the army.
