History and visit Mathurins street in Paris
The one-way Mathurins street spans the 8th and 9th arrondissements of Paris. The presence of this street was attested from the 13th century. Plotted on an old road which opened on farms belonging to the Mathurins, this street connects Rue Scribe at Place Diaghilev and Boulevard Malesherbes. Prior to its current name, the street was known as “Rue Neuve des Mathurins.” This street lost much of its territory after the construction of the Opera intersection and the creation of Rue Gluck. Presumably, the street was named Mathurins to refer to the religious order of the Mathurins, whose convent was once located in the street. Rue des Mathurins properly begins at No. 19 Place Diaghilev and No. 17 Rue Scribe. It ends at No. 30 Boulevard Malesherbes. Honoré de Balzac was inspired by the beauty of this street, featuring a luxurious mansion of Ferdinand du Tillet in his novel “A Daughter of Eve.” You can find some small historic buildings lining Rue des Mathurins. At No. 26 is the Hotel George Sand, which hosted the famous novelist when it was known as “Hotel Florence”. At No. 38 is the Hotel des Mathurins. Theatre “Michel”, which suffered during the flood of the Seine in 1910, is located at No. 38 Rue des Mathurins.
